WOMEN IN GENRE FICTION: GENDER STEREOTYPES AND BREAKING PAST THE LABELS

  • Cox Business Center

(HALL B)
The world of SFF/horror has been heavily influenced by classic, well-loved, male-focused stories like "Lord of the Rings." As writers and fans seek to broaden the genre to include all genders, we are faced with challenges. How do we create believable characters of all genders? How can we push past labels and create characters that are universal and speak to all readers?

FEMALES IN GENRE FICTION: WRITING STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS AND HANDLING GENDER STEREOTYPES (CONFERENCE A)

With genre fiction selling at an all-time high, it's no wonder that people are talking about the roles women play in science fiction, fantasy, and horror. How do SFF genre writers deal with creating strong, realistic female characters that defy stereotypes? And how can readers, gamers, and film-goers help promote believable, interesting characters of every gender and make the world of genre fiction continue to be progressive and meaningful? That's what we'll be talking about on this panel.
